However, you can also be kind to people you don't know and that will still make you happy regardless. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo here you go...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eI'd like to invite you to go on a 30 day kindness challenge with me - showing acts of kindness from little things to bigger things, not just to the people we love, but also to the people we don't know - because being kind without expecting anything in return \"makes us happy\". \u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd in order to adopt the habit, attitude, and mindset of \"being kind\", we need to do this for at least 30 days. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eActs of Kindness = a kind act you could do for someone.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHappiness Score = how happy doing that act of kindness makes you feel.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eKindness Score = the impact the act of kindness makes in the life of the receiver.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have come up with a list of things that we could do on a daily basis - they are all very small and cost us very little or nothing. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e1. Smile more\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSmile - a free and simple act that anyone can do and can bright up anyone's day. Our world has become so busy that if you smile for no reason, people think you're crazy. But smile has been one of my best weapons. I have used smile to soften the heart of enemies. I have used smile to remove social awkwardness. I have used smile to get away with things. I have used smile to light up someone's mood. I have used smile to make someone feel special. I have used smile to make myself happy. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst simple act of kindness - smile. Smile at the barista who serves you coffee. Smile at the person next to you in line. Smile at a co-worker in the elevator. Smile at the security guard at the door.  Smile at a cleaner and thank her\/him for the excellent cleaning. Smile at yourself in the mirror, thinking to yourself you will have a beautiful day. Smile as much as you can because when you smile, you automatically have a clear mind and feel positive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou might be surprised at how many smiles you get back. It is infectious!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e2. Share your snacks\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt might sound like a cliche act of kindness but little things like this dramatically increases the good vibes people have about you. Try sharing your snacks with other people. Buy a big pack of chips or fruits and offer them to the people you work with. Not only will this make people think you're sweet, but it will also make you happy. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e3. Offer your seat to a senior, a kid, or simply anyone \u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCommuting can be a pain but it would be even more of a pain to someone not as fit as you. Try offering someone a seat and choose to stand up instead. Think of standing up as a way to exercise your core, legs, and arms. Receiving a Thank You in the morning is also a beautiful way to start your morning. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e4. Be friendly\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes we feel like saying hi to a stranger is a flirtatious act. Sometimes we are scared that being friendly to strangers we will receive an awkward smile and eye contact in return. We live in a world where people are too scared to be friendly because your friendliness can be unwelcome. We sometimes act unfriendly because it is cool. But try adopting the habit of being friendly and you will be reciprocated with friendliness. The same goes to love - a man can only love a woman when he senses that she opens her heart to receive love and that she can give love back in return, and vice versa. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e5. Give some tips\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the US, giving tips is an etiquette. However, in many countries including Australia, giving tips is not what most people do on a daily basis - maybe when you have dinner at a very nice restaurant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTry giving tips even at the burger joint down the road or at the coffee shop near your work. A smile and a Thank You on the face of the person who serves you can make you a little bit happier even just for a moment. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e6. Use environmentally friendly products \u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis can be having a fair-trade coffee, using an recycled bag and paper, and washing your clothes with eco-friendly detergent. Knowing that you are one of the very few people in this world to care about the environment and the earth should make you feel proud and happy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e7. Drive with kindness\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe all seem to be in a rush to get to a place. We get upset with the traffic. We get annoyed with slow drivers in front of us. We get angry at cars that keep changing lanes. Driving is actually a great test that you can use to test and improve yourself as the situation on the road is inevitable. You can teach yourself to be calm, patient, and resilient - to not get angry at other cars and to not get frustrated with the traffic. You can learn to be kind and giving by giving way to other cars. Practicing this over and over, you will notice that you have become more calm and feel more peaceful inside. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e8. Lend someone a good book\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBook is one of the best investments. A good book is not just a great friend but also a great source of wisdom. Lending someone a good book that you have read and think it would benefit the person is a beautiful act of kindness that is not done often enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have once improved my close friend's life when we first became friends by giving him design magazines he needed to read to get inspired and motivated (he's a communication design major). He used to play computer games in his free time. But when I introduced him to those design magazines, he admitted that he found joy in reading them and felt more motivated and inspired. He now reads design magazines in his free time and ditched the computer games for good. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou never know whose life you will improve. Lend someone a good book. Or even better, buy someone a good book! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e9. Help animals\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether the animal is injured or hungry, you can help by giving them food and treat them with care. You can give bread to the birds in the park and the fish in the pond. You can donate some money to organizations that help animals and help them spread the words about their causes. In some Buddhist countries, you can go to the slaughterhouse or the meat works and donate some money to set the cows free so they won't get killed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnimals are just like us. They have feelings. They are here to make the world a more beautiful place. They are here to make up a part of the nature. Although most of us eat meat, we can still help other animals by being kind to them. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e10. Help children in need\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost of us are very blessed to be standing here today. But not everyone was born into a warm, loving and supportive family. By being grateful and thankful for what you have in your life, you can be kind to other kids who don't have the opportunities that you do or once did.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou can help the children in need especially those in the poor countries by donating money to help get fed and get the education they need. You can even go an extra mile by volunteering to build schools or teach these children English or a skill like computer, math, or science.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe emotional reward and memory that you get from this act of kindness last for a lifetime. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e11. Donate your blood\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBesides feeling good that we can help other human beings, according to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"http:\/\/aje.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/148\/5\/445.full.pdf\"\u003eAmerican Journal of Epidemiology\u003c\/a\u003e, blood donations help keep the levels of iron in the body in check, especially in males. This has shown to reduce heart disease as excessive iron build up can result in excessive oxidative damage which is the major culprit implicated in accelerated ageing, heart attacks, strokes etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoreover, \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/jnci.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/100\/14\/996.abstract\"\u003eaccording to Journal of the National Cancer Institute\u003c\/a\u003e, donating blood frequently will also reduce the risk of cancers as high levels of iron have been implicated in cancer. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, are you ready to donate your blood? \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e12. Be a good listener\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA monk once said,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\"It's okay if you cannot be generous with your money, you can also be generous with your time.\"\u003c\/b\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost of the time we neglect the people around us and what they're going through. Everyone keeps their business to themselves as they don't want to annoy other people. But sometimes if we look around, we will find that a friend might be going through a hard time during a breakup. Another friend might be having a family or a work drama. Whatever it may be, as much as we hate listening to people whining, it'd be nice to offer to genuinely listen. Sometimes what a person in distress needs is a pair of good ears and a supportive pad on the shoulder or a hug.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e13. Help someone move, pack, or set up a shop\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a busy society, we seem to calculate every waking hour into money.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eWhen in fact, there is one thing that money cannot buy - not a genuine, long-lasting one anyway - that is \"friendship\".\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHelping a friend move, pack, or set up a shop or exhibition when it's not much of a hassle to you is a great way to strengthen friendship. The friend might feel like they owe you a big favor. But what you get from helping someone is feeling good and proud that you have done something nice for the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e14. Teach others kindness\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKindness is what makes the world a better place. Kindness is what keeps hungry kids in Africa alive and help victims of natural disasters survive. Teaching other people kindness is multiplying love in this world. Teach your kids to be kind since they're young so that it becomes a part of their character. Inspire your friends to be kind. Initiate a group activity that shows an act of kindness. Influence them. Lead by examples and show your friends that it feels great to be kind. Over and over, even the selfish friends will surrender to this beautiful act because of the effect it has on the kind spirit and the people around them. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cb\u003e15. Show affection\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHugging is a common greeting act in a lot of cultures. But even though it might seem like everyone is doing it, the effect it has on both the giver and the receiver is understated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am originally from a country where hugging is not a common greeting act. However, I have lived in Australia long enough that every time I see my friends and family back at home, I just want to give them a hug. The effect it has on people is tremendous. Because Thai people are not used to getting hugged all the time, they can feel the depth and warmth every time they hug and get hugged. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHugs feel great. (situation)\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eWhat triggered your negative emotion? (triggers)\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eWhat was your response or reaction that followed the negative emotion? How destructive were you? (reaction)\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMake a list of these moments. Think of a few so we can find patterns.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eQuestions to ask:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cb\u003eDid anything that happened in your childhood or in the past resemble the scenarios?\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eThink of the triggers and the emotions the triggers provoked.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHow did you respond to such scenarios in the past?\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHow have you been carrying on the way you respond to such situations?\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eHow has this way of responding been affecting your life and your relationships?\u003c\/b\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow you probably realize that the way you’ve been responding to such situations haven’t been very positive. Some might have been quite damaging. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eThe first step to change is awareness.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eNow that you’re aware of some of your pattern, you can learn to change the way you respond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv draggable=\"true\" class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-hr\"\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\n\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cb\u003e2. Get To The Root Cause: Heal Past Wounds\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChange is not easy. The way we respond to triggers is tied to something from the past.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eSo in order for us to begin working on changing our pattern, we need to fix what contributed to the development of our pattern in the first place.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eWe begin by forgiving past hurts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eUsually the anger repressed within us comes from our childhood experiences where we felt we were more powerless.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eThe anger will never go away until you make peace with whatever or whoever it was that angered you, hurt you, ridiculed you, or made you feel suppressed or small in any way.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003eWhen you begin to rebuild your relationships with these people, you’ll begin to see that the repressed anger within you slowly fades away. When you learn to reframe the story about what happened to you, you will replace anger that filled the hole in your heart with compassion and empathy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eRemember, humans are driven by two things - to avoid pain and to gain pleasure.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003eThose who bullied you were often suppressed or bullied at home, so they took it out at school. Forgive them and send them some compassion. If it’s your parent, understand that they did the best they could at the time. If they left you, understand that maybe they didn’t even love themselves, how could they even give you what they didn’t have within them? They did the best they could to protect you from harm - harm that could have come out of their own darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnderstand that people see the world as they are, not as it is. So how one treats you is in accordance to their world, their past experiences, and what they know best. It might not fit well with you, but your caretaker did their best to do what they thought would be the best for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eForgive. So that you can move on and find peace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv draggable=\"true\" class=\"media-holder media-holder-draggable media-holder-hr\"\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"media-button icon_close media-killer\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cb\u003e3. Change Your Pattern\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow that you’ve made peace with past wounds, the roots of your destructive pattern, you need to develop a new pattern. But of course, because you’ve been living with this pattern for so many years, you are not going to change overnight just because you’ve made peace with what caused you pain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo how can you deal with your destructive pattern?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003e3.1 Watch out for the triggers.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen events or situations that resemble triggers from the past come up again, you might naturally respond in the same way that you have always responded. Now that you’re aware of it, pause before responding and decide to respond in a different way - in a healthier, softer, non-destructive way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou might still find it hard to not let triggers trigger you as they’ve been triggering you for years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003e3.2 Shift your perspective\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere are some tips that could help you shift perspective, and as a result, shift the way you feel about the triggers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLearn to put yourself in others' shoes. Learn to understand the other person and see things from their point of view.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLearn to build patience and calmness. Build mental strength and increase your patience bandwidth. These things need to be practiced and cultivated. You’re not going to build them overnight. You need to create new pathways in your brain and make them stronger through repetition.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLearn to let go and realize you can’t control people or situations. You can only control yourself and the way you perceive and respond to what happens to you. If you change your perception, your feeling also changes.
